If CatDog, a conjoined twin of a cat and a dog, who share the same body with no tail or hind legs, always seemed to you a bit freaky for a kid’s show, then you might get why strict rules must apply when it comes to human tissue processing. Translational research facilitates the study of human organs and tissues extracted from patients, in order to better grasp the mechanisms underlying disease like cancer. But it is not without flaws. Harvested specimens from human patients, upon removal from the host, are immediately subjected to ischemia and other external factors from which they would be otherwise protected. This may result in stress-induced molecular and genetic changes, and cause bias in subsequent studies. Therefore, much effort has been put into extracting and processing tissues through strict methods to best preserve organ and cell integrity for downstream studies. At the same time, for any research involving human tissues, regulatory issues must be addressed. The need for national standards led to the creation of Institutional Review Boards (IRBs), responsible for protecting research participants. Consent must be obtained from all participants of biomedical research studies, and that this consent be documented in an informed consent form.
